What on wider expansion though? When there is a site available there will invariably be opposition from local residents who are concerned about the impact of a store on the local trading environment.
The challenge is to continue to find new sites that will complement the existing store network, but are right in terms of demographic as well as geography and as Booths venture into Manchester and Cheshire for the first time, there has to be a consideration around logistics and locations of depots too in an effort to supply the stores for the right cost in the right time.
I visited the Ilkley store a few weeks back and I was keen to see how it was shaping up since M Local opened not too far away from them. Naturally the major challenge will come when Tesco open their larger store that they eventually got permission for by the railway station.
Certainly the people of Ilkley like a certain level of food and drink considering the continued presence of Booths and independent retailers such as Lishmans butchers. The focus on locally produced food is clear when you enter the store, the feature product at the front of Produce was Cauliflowers that were grown in Hesketh Bank in Lancashire.
The advertising features the farmers name and his picture to enhance the relationship between farmer and customer and to let customers know where their food has come from. His relatives still speak for 96 per cent of the shares, with the rest belonging to staff. There should be no shortage of interest. David Webster, the former chairman and co-founder of Safeway in the UK, one of the finest food retailers of recent memory, and no slouch at judging a good or bad business, tried to buy out Booths several times.
Waitrose had a nibble in , but again the deal was rebuffed the two then formed a buying partnership. Booths will carry on, flying the independent flag.
Sadly, that is an unrealistic prospect. However smart it is — and Booths has led the field for innovation — and however terrific the offering and however much it appeals to those who want to source their groceries from farmers they can name and, in some instances, even know, Booths is struggling to compete.
This has been a tough period economically in the North, which has lacked the resilience of the South. Austerity and lack of investment are hitting hard. The love of Booths — and it is amazing just how many people profess to adore the brand — only goes skin deep. The discounters which are increasingly proving no slouches when it comes to quality are growing ever more popular.
In the locations where Booths is based, the distances consumers have to travel can be large. After a slow start, internet buying is on the rise.
