What does match ammo mean

These help the bullet retain velocity better by reducing aerodynamic drag. Meanwhile, some types of match pistol ammunition will use wadcutter bullets that make cleaner holes in paper so that target scoring is easier.

So how is match ammo made then? Is it uniquely designed from the ground up? Is it simply loaded with a match-type bullet? Is it merely especially accurate cartridges made from the same machines as all the other ammo?

Well, it turns out the answer is all of the above. A larger sampling could conceivably disprove our findings. Interestingly, the loads with the lowest standard deviation and therefore most consistent velocity in our test group were Winchester Match HPBT. This was the clear winner with an average group of just 1.

We are officially declaring the Prvi Partizan the winner of our small test group in. Who would have thought it, right? Otherwise, we should have recorded better numbers from the Federal Gold Medal loads.

Like so many things in the world of shooting, there is no clear cut answer. After all, ammo is just a tool and some tools are better suited for some jobs than they are for others. For competition shooting, where repeatable precision accuracy is essential for high scores, you need high quality ammunition. Even the smallest variances can have a huge impact on your final score. True match grade quality ammunition is crucial for success in these highly competitive arenas.

Law enforcement and military snipers also require surgical precision when it comes to their ammo. Lives depend on accurate shots, often at extreme distances where the slightest fluctuation in performance could have disastrous consequences. If you are an amateur recreational long-range shooter who gets a major thrill out of busting bulls-eyes, you might be willing to fork out the extra cash to fund your hobby.

The needs of the average hunter or recreational shooter are easily met with less expensive ammunition, so long as they choose loads that are reasonably reliable and accurate. It is often used as a marketing tool to get shooters to spend more money without producing measurably better results.

And if you want true precision ammunition, you can always load your own. Not all firearms are created equal. Just like match grade ammo is supposedly manufactured to exacting tolerances, competition firearms are designed to be just as precise. You may get magnificent performance out of some firearms, while you may only achieve mediocrity with others no matter what ammo you feed it. In other words, they just seem to perform better with one particular load. You will probably find you get the best performance out of a high end competition weapon when you load it with premium ammunition.

Think of these firearms like luxury cars. You could actually damage a vehicle with cheap gasoline. The same is true of expensive firearms. Feed them quality ammunition, and they will be good to you for years to come.

There is no shortcut to mastery. Not even with fancy ammo. Practice the basics and then practice them some more if you want to be an accurate shooter. Take this article as permission to spend some time on the range. Use that time to practice the basics of consistent shooting form.

In addition, spend some time testing different loads to see what produces the best results from your particular firearm.

The more we all know, the better organized and stronger the shooting and hunting community will be. Getting a consistent amount of gunpowder inside the cartridge is an essential part of repeatable accuracy.

A good way to test how consistent the powder charge is inside a given box of ammo is to chronograph the speed of each bullet as it leaves the barrel. Match ammunition, especially rifle ammunition, tends to have match primers. These primers have more care and more attention to detail built into them than regular primers. Because of this, they deliver more consistent ignition of the gunpowder inside the case. This, in turn, delivers more consistent burning of the powder inside the case.

All of this adds up to more precision and more repeatable results on the range. The modern cartridge case is a miracle of precise manufacturing standards and meticulous quality control. The case literally holds everything together. As such, the more care and precision that is taken with creating a case that not only meets SAAMI standards, but goes beyond them, the more accurate the ammo will be.

In short, higher standards of case tolerances and build quality are two of the hallmarks of match ammunition. That depends on you and your gear. First, work on your skills by taking a shooting class and then engaging in intentional, directed practice. Then worry about how precise your ammo is. Secondly, look at your equipment. Yes, there are some real bargains out there, but in general, the more you pay for your gun, the more accurate and reliable it will be.

He killed two nice Nebraska whitetails that season and went on to shoot many other deer with those bullets. I was so impressed with how it performed that I used it on a couple of whitetails over the years as well.

With the grain Berger Hybrid, that includes several large mule deer bucks and stout corn-fed whitetails. Shot distances have ranged from more than yards down to about 30 feet. None of these critters made it very far after being hit. Despite this perfect track record, I still have some reservations. That said, I did see one bull elk killed by a first-time hunter, a year-old boy, using a grain A-Max from a 6.

Being inexperienced, he put the crosshairs right on the point of the shoulder and let fly. Back at camp, I poked around in the carcass looking for bullet fragments.
